We are pleased to introduce to you, Karmen Robinson, who is assisting HOPE’s social work staff as this semester’s Winthrop Intern. Karmen lives in Kershaw with her family and dachshund, Molly. She has 2 brothers and 2 sisters, one sister is her twin.

Karmen completed her undergraduate degree in criminal justice, sociology and social work at USC in Columbia. She is now pursuing her master’s degree in social work from Winthrop University. Her ultimate goal is to become a mental health therapist, empowering individuals to seek treatment for their mental health issues.

In school Karmen studied “Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs” that start with food, water, shelter, and safety which are among the basic needs addressed by HOPE. Karmen acknowledged that only after you address a person’s basic needs can you can begin to address emotional needs. “I have witnessed the benefits of improving one’s quality of life through therapy and how it has the ability to help others function in their day to day lives, one day I hope to be a resource for others in that way.”
