What a gorgeous day for a walk! Sunday, May 2, HOPE held its first annual Walk to End Hunger and Bring HOPE event on the Lindsay Pettus Greenway. HOPE chose this event as their new Spring fundraiser because it promotes health, connects neighbors to nature and allowed participants to engage in COVID friendly activities.

HOPE offered two options, a virtual walk at a place of their choosing during the week preceding the actual event and an in-person walk on Sunday, May 2. Many neighborhoods organized community walks and one family even took their shirts to St. Louis, MO and walked with their grandchildren. Youth groups, family, friends, and Rotary members joined the 175 walkers on the greenway. Total number of walkers both virtual and on the greenway was 265.

The United Way partnered with HOPE to sponsor a food drive resulting in 2,320 pounds of shelf-stable food. Through generous sponsorships, donors and ticket purchases, HOPE was able to raise $34,000 of much needed funds and food to stock our three healthy choice pantries during the lean summer months and ensure that nutrition and wellness education will continue through HOPE’s Healthy Teaching Kitchen.
